Pulse Oximeter Can Be Modified To Read HbA1c, Glycated Hb!

पल्स ऑक्सीमीटर को HbA1c, ग्लाइकेटेड एचबी पढ़ने के लिए संशोधित किया जा सकता है!
Prompt: PhysiologyWalla has been presenting since 2017 the idea 💡 of Diabetes HbA1c Monitoring by using Modified Pulse Oximeter to InnoCentive,Medtronics etc, which is as follows:
A novel idea 💡to monitor diabetes non-invasively allowing patients to adjust diet, exercise and medication.
It simply requires to study experimentally in laboratory the wavelength of light absorbed by HbA1c,glycated and non glycated haemoglobin!
PhysiologyWalla is Dr Simon Richard, MBBS (PMCH, Patna),MD (AIIMS, New Delhi),FCAIRCSI (Primary, Dublin) and working as Anaesthesiologist since the mid 90’s!
Pulse Oximeter (SpO2) has two light emitting diodes (LED) -one for OxyHb 940 nm and another for DeoxyHb 660 nm. The modified Pulse Oximeter will have similarly two light emitting diodes -one for GLYCATED Hb and another for Non-GLYCATED Hb. On the other side of the SpO2 probe is a sensor and calculates on the basis of Beer-Lambert Law!
A patient might have very low glucose level at present BUT very high HbA1c -implying that in the PAST his glucose level used to be very high -due to improper care about diet, exercise and medication. Glucose level estimation is useful for acute management BUT HbA1c estimation is useful for preventing uncontrolled diabetes by changing diet, exercise and medication over some days or weeks which will reflect in the percentage of HbA1c which should be normally 6-7% (equivalent to 48 mmol/mol).
This modified Pulse Oximeter will show in percentage which can be digitally displayed as equivalent in mmol/mol as well.
Once it will come into the market, patients will choose to buy this Modified Pulse Oximeter for Diabetes HbA1c monitoring preferably over invasive AccuChek devices in the market.
This Modified Pulse Oximeter for Diabetes HbA1c Monitoring will prove to be a revolutionary device in prevention and management of Diabetes.
Will need collaborating with the Pulse Oximeter manufacturers like Biox, Nellcor, Masimo and others.

Critical Analysis of the Statement
The statement outlines an innovative proposal to non-invasively monitor diabetes by measuring HbA1c levels using a modified pulse oximeter. Here is a critical analysis of the idea:
Strengths
- Non-Invasive Approach: This is the most significant advantage. Non-invasive monitoring can improve patient compliance and reduce the discomfort associated with blood glucose testing.
- Immediate Feedback: Provides real-time data, allowing for timely adjustments to diet, exercise, and medication.
- Preventive Measures: HbA1c monitoring can help in preventing long-term complications by giving a better picture of glucose management over time.
- Market Potential: If successful, it could disrupt the current market by replacing invasive methods like the AccuChek device.
Weaknesses
- Technical Feasibility: The concept hinges on the ability to accurately differentiate between glycated and non-glycated hemoglobin using light wavelengths. This may be challenging to achieve with the required precision.
- Validation and Testing: Extensive lab testing and clinical trials would be required to ensure reliability and accuracy.
- Regulatory Hurdles: Gaining regulatory approval could be time-consuming and stringent, especially in different global markets.
- Integration and Development: Collaborating with existing manufacturers like Biox, Nellcor, and Masimo will involve significant R&D and could face resistance.
Opportunities
- Collaborations: Working with established players in the pulse oximeter industry can fast-track development and market penetration.
- Technological Advancement: Leveraging advancements in sensor technology and algorithms can enhance accuracy.
- Consumer Market: There is a substantial market for diabetes-related healthcare products, driven by an increasing global prevalence of diabetes.
- Preventative Healthcare Focus: Aligns well with the global shift towards preventative healthcare.
Threats
- Competitive Landscape: The current market has established players with invasive glucose monitoring systems that are well-accepted and trusted.
- Technological Uncertainties: New technological challenges could arise, delaying or halting the development process.
- Consumer Acceptance: Convincing consumers to switch from a known invasive method to a new non-invasive method might pose a challenge.
